Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick building with a low shingled roof and large windows, fronted by a wide asphalt parking area with sun glare, surrounded by dense green trees and shrubs.

The compressor in a central AC unit takes the hardest hit from a long Gulf Coast cooling season: it starts and stops on every cycle, and the contactor and condenser fan motor share that load. Homes in Grenada County, MS run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. A contractor diagnosing a failed system here checks those parts first, because the hours on them are real and the wear shows. Refrigerant loss and electrical faults in the disconnect or contactor are the next things on the list. A system that was undersized at install has had little margin to work with across those years of daily cycling.

Ductwork fitted to earlier-generation equipment does not disappear when that equipment is replaced, and in Grenada County much of it is still in place. Half the homes in Grenada County, Mississippi were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor opening a central AC unit here finds components that have been running in conditions those original ducts created, and the question is whether replacement parts for a system that old are still in production. When they are not, the repair conversation becomes a different one.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house interior showing ducted air handling equipment, ceiling ducts, furniture in two rooms, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines outside the wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually along a side wall or at the rear, and it is often where a repair starts. The compressor inside it does the hardest mechanical work in the system, and a failed compressor is one of the more common reasons a central AC stops cooling. The condenser coil wraps around the outside of that cabinet and sheds heat to the air around it.

Inside the house, the air handler or furnace cabinet holds the evaporator coil, which sits above the heat exchanger or in its own plenum and is the piece a contractor checks when the system runs but the air stays warm. The blower fan that pulls air across that coil also lives in this cabinet, and a failed motor or a clogged wheel can show up as weak airflow before anything else fails. The refrigerant lines that run between the two units carry the working fluid, and a contractor will check both pressure and line condition early in any diagnosis.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply and what each needs in your specific house.
