Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story brick house with a hipped shingle roof, large front windows and a central door, fronted by a wide paved driveway with sun flare, surrounded by green deciduous trees.

Sizing a central AC system for a Yazoo County home is not a calculation a contractor estimates loosely and corrects later. Homes in Yazoo County, MS run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. A compressor carrying that kind of seasonal load accumulates wear on its contactor and condenser fan through repeated start and stop cycles, and an undersized unit runs longer per cycle, pushing those parts harder. Contractors account for the local heat load before committing to equipment, because an install that is off by even a modest margin shows the gap early and keeps showing it.

Ductwork laid in for an older system carries assumptions about airflow that a new central AC unit does not share. Half the homes in Yazoo County, Mississippi were built in 1982 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor sizing and running new equipment through existing ducts has to confirm that the layout, the sizing, and the condition of what is already there will actually carry the load the new unit needs. If it will not, the duct work becomes part of the installation scope, not a background condition. Electrical service gets the same check: a panel wired for the draw of an older system may not meet what a modern unit requires.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house with the roof lifted, showing interior rooms, ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, which are the heart of the refrigeration side of the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet stands in a utility closet, basement, or attic and pushes conditioned air through the home. A refrigerant line set runs between the two, connecting them.

The evaporator coil mounts directly above or below the air handler and is the point where heat transfers out of the indoor air. A condensate drain line runs from that coil to a nearby drain, carrying away the moisture the coil pulls from the air. The thermostat goes on an interior wall and is what the homeowner uses to control the whole system.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific house.
