Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick house with a gray shingled roof and white-framed windows, fronted by a large empty asphalt driveway with sun glare, surrounded by dense green trees under a bright hazy sky.

Sizing a central AC system in Attala County correctly matters more than it might elsewhere, because an undersized unit runs its compressor harder and longer, and the compressor here gets little rest. Homes in Attala County, MS run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. A compressor cycling through that kind of continuous seasonal demand accumulates wear on the contactor and condenser fan at a pace that a marginal install will show early. Contractors doing load calculations here account for that, because a system that is just barely adequate on paper will be asked to prove it every summer.

Ductwork laid in for equipment that has since been removed or replaced does not automatically suit what a contractor is now putting in. Half the homes in Attala County, Mississippi were built in 1981 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A central AC installation here turns on whether the existing duct runs can carry the airflow a new system needs, and whether the electrical service has the capacity that system draws. Panels sized for a lighter load, ducts routed for an older layout, neither condition shows up on a permit or a floor plan. A contractor has to open and measure before the quote is real.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house with the roof lifted, showing interior rooms, ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, which are the core of the system. Inside, the air handler or furnace-based evaporator cabinet stands in a utility closet, basement, or attic and holds the evaporator coil that conditions the air before it moves through the home.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting the indoor and outdoor sides through a small penetration in the wall. The thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over when the system runs.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to this particular house.

Severe Weather Events in Attala County

Weather puts direct mechanical stress on cooling equipment, and what a county sees year over year shapes how hard that equipment has to work. Central AC sized and installed for local conditions holds up better than equipment spec'd without that picture.
