Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story red brick ranch house with white-framed windows, a white side door, and a shallow gray roof, fronted by a large empty asphalt driveway and surrounded by green deciduous trees under a bright overcast sky.

Sizing a central AC system for a home in Alcorn County demands more than picking a unit that covers the square footage. Homes in Alcorn County, MS run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. The compressor, the condenser fan, and the contactor accumulate wear through every one of those months, cycling on and off as the house calls for cooling. A system that is undersized for the actual load runs longer per cycle and starts more often, which is where contactor and compressor wear compound fastest. A contractor completing a load calculation here accounts for that sustained demand before settling on equipment, because an install that is light on capacity will fall short well before its time.

Ductwork laid down for a system that no longer exists in it is the starting point for most central AC installations here. Half the homes in Alcorn County, Mississippi were built in 1981 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pricing the job has to assess whether those existing runs can carry the airflow a modern unit delivers, or whether they restrict it in ways that undercut the equipment's performance from day one. Electrical service gets the same look: the panel has to handle the draw of the new unit, and in stock this age that is not a given. The unit itself is the straightforward part of the quote. What takes time is determining how much of what is already in the house stays.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house interior showing ducted HVAC piping, an indoor air handler unit, and an outdoor condenser with fan connected by a line, rendered in grey tones on a white background.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the hardware that does the heaviest work in the system. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility closet, attic, or basement and moves conditioned air through the home. Between them runs the refrigerant line set, a pair of copper tubes that connect the two units.

The evaporator coil sits inside or directly above the air handler and is the point where the system pulls heat out of your indoor air. A thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the system its operating signal. The condensate drain line runs from the air handler to a floor drain or outdoors, carrying away the moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.

Severe Weather History in Alcorn County

Mississippi heat and humidity already push cooling equipment hard, and storm activity adds another layer of wear on what gets installed. A system sized and built for local conditions holds up better than one that is not.
