A single-story red brick building with white-framed windows and a low shingled roof, fronted by a large empty asphalt parking lot with sun glare, surrounded by dense green trees under a bright overcast sky.

Size a central AC system wrong in Calhoun County and the compressor will tell you. Homes in Calhoun County, MS run cooling about five months a year, from May through September. The condenser fan and the contactor cycle through that same stretch every year, and a system that is undersized runs longer and harder each time the heat builds. A contractor doing the installation has to run a proper load calculation for the house as it actually sits, accounting for insulation, window area, and duct condition, because cutting that step short shows up in compressor wear before the equipment is anywhere close to the end of its rated life.

Ductwork laid down for an earlier generation of equipment was designed around what that equipment needed, not what a modern central AC unit will ask of it. Half the homes in Calhoun County, Mississippi were built in 1980 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor sizing a new system here has to look at what the existing duct network actually delivers before they can commit to a unit or a price. Trunks that are undersized for current airflow requirements, or runs that were added and patched over the decades, will underperform regardless of what gets connected to them. The electrical service is a separate check. A new central AC unit draws more than older systems did, and a panel that was never upgraded to meet that load needs attention before the install moves forward.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing interior rooms, ductwork, an indoor air handler or furnace, and a refrigerant line running to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the hardware that drives the whole system. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility closet, attic, or basement and moves conditioned air through the home. These two units are what a homeowner is buying when they commission a central AC installation.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor and indoor units, and an expansion valve seats at the air handler to regulate refrigerant flow into the evaporator coil. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over when the system runs and at what target temperature.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your house.
